France is a leading player in European timber production. It has been managing its diversified forests for many centuries, both ecologically and economically. French forests are constantly expanding and at the center of it all is the French White Oak.

It may seem plain enough, but the reason we all descend—or ascend—into childlike delight when the holidays come round is the very same thing that they are all about: family, and all the memories they bring with them.

At one point in history, a certain Louis XIII turned a humble two-story hunting lodge a few kilometres southwest of Paris into a chateau. Years later, his successor, Louis XIV decided more was needed. So bit by bit, year after year, rooms and wings and terraces were added, art and trophies were hung, and the gardens were enlarged. It became more than a place for quiet reverie. It turned into a place of ceremony, a place to entertain; it turned into a palais at Versailles.

As the nobility’s taste grew richer, the Palace of Versailles grew too. When the French Revolution came and the nobility went, the palace still stood. Now, with a country’s history etched into stone and marble, it stands as a museum. Now, representing the rise and fall of an era, perhaps, spectres of bygone residents still roam the halls at Versailles.
